MITERD CADv2025 methods and changes

Summary

Publisher Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITERD)
Full name Factores de emisión. Registro de huella de carbono
Description The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) is the Spanish government department responsible for developing and implementing national policies on environmental protection, energy, climate change, water resources, biodiversity, and demographic challenges. Its mission encompasses ensuring ecological balance, promoting sustainable energy, and addressing issues related to population dynamics, such as rural depopulation.

Publication and Version Reference

MITERD publishes updated emission factors annually in May. Each publication represents the data from the year past but is judged to be representative for the year of publication. See table below

Methodology Readout Notes

General Methodology

Where the source provides a per-gas breakdown, individual gas values were read out and GWP-weighted using AR6 values. Biogenic CO₂ emissions were read out where explicitly stated in the source.

The following electricity supply categories are implemented:

Source category (ES) Description C+A+D keyword

Suppliers classified as "etiquetado de comercializadoras que no han efectuado redenciones de GdO" (labeling of utility suppliers that have not made guarantee of origin redemptions) are not included, as no redeemed guarantees of origin are associated with their supply.

No residual mix calculations are applied.

Approximation of Generation and Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Emissions

Well-to-tank (WTT) upstream emissions are applied to the total CO₂e value, including any biogenic component, as the source does not provide a WTT split by emissions type.

MITERD does not publish lifecycle stage emission factors. Upstream generation and T&D emissions are estimated via a loss factor approach (GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, p. 96). A fixed proportional increase is applied to the core electricity production emission factor. These ratios are applied uniformly across all supply categories.

Lifecycle stage Loss factor
Transmission & Distribution 10%
Generation (fuel-cycle) 20%

The loss factors above are approximations. They are applied uniformly and do not reflect supplier-specific or regional grid characteristics.

The 20% generation factor is taken from the total CO₂e value including biogenics.

Data Considerations and Notes

Estimated biogenic component for certain biofuels

For certain biofuels where the biogenic component was not available in the original source, the biogenic component of an adjacent biofuel factor was used as an approximation.
