Methodological Readout Details
The 2019 baseline for emissions related to expenditures remains constant (still version 3.8.2 of Exiobase), so the update is solely on corrections for currency exchange and inflation, rather than changes to the fundamental data. On our spend-based factors support page you can see the overview of the currency exchange and inflation reduction values that were used for the update. See this example for China – Chemical n.e.c. (Industry) (only the emission factors in bold are visible in the software).

All emission factors where the midpoint of the measurement period falls after January 1, 2023, will reflect this update. This ensures that recent and future assessments account for current economic conditions. The drivers of the possible changes to your emissions:
Increase in Emission Factors: Result from lower valuation of the local currency compared to major currencies such as the EUR, GBP, or USD. Could also occur due to increased inflation in the local economy.
Decrease in Emission Factors: Occur when the local currency has a higher valuation relative to the major currencies. Alternatively, this might reflect a slower rate of inflation growth.
We did some additional regional updates to improve accuracy.
RoW Asia and Pacific, RoW America, RoW Europe, RoW Africa, RoW Middle East (2018-2023) were updated due to an earlier underestimation of the inflation effect.
South Korea, Russia, and Taiwan (2018-2023). These specific regional data points have been updated with. Previously, only aggregated values for "Rest of the World (RoW) Asia" were available, offering less granularity.
